2015: The Summer of Divorce
2015: The Summer of Divorce

This past summer has been full of celebrity divorces. Even Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog announced that they are splitting up! So, why are so many celebrities calling it quits? Is our divorce rate sky-rocketing?

Before we take what is happening in Hollywood as indicative of marriages across the country falling apart, consider the following factors reported by USA Today regarding celebrity divorces:

  • Many famous couples prefer to announce their divorce at times when they believe the public is not paying close attention. In fact, many publicists and their celebrity clients believe that breaking the news of the divorce on a Friday, on a holiday, or during the slow days of summer means it won’t get as much traction. However, the more famous the couple, the more planning that must go into making the announcement. Fans often do not realize that the couple has been separated for months before the divorce announcement has been made – this is because of the amount of planning that must take place before the announcement is made.
  • Summer is also a time when most people slow down at work and focus more on their home life. Even celebrities slow down and take time to think about what they want for their future. Although many part ways amicably and agree to share custody of their children, they realize that splitting is the healthier decision for everyone involved.
  • Celebrities have every aspect of their lives scrutinized by the media and the public. In fact, even when things are going well in the marriage, the tabloids run stories predicting that the couple will divorce, that somebody is cheating, or a variety of other negative stories that take a toll on even the strongest of marriages.

Among the celebrities that have split in 2015 are Patrick Dempsey and Jillian Fink, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, and Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert.

Fighting divorce rumors are Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The couple has recently emphatically denied divorce rumors on social media because their children saw the posts and asked about it. Social media alone has dramatically decreased the ability of celebrities to maintain any privacy, which can make it extremely difficult, particularly when children are involved and hear the rumors.
