Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just a federal holiday or a day off from school. It is a day to celebrate and recognize Dr. King’s leadership of the modern American Civil Rights Movement. Human Rights Activist Coretta Scott King once said about her husband, “On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and non violence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.”
HERE ARE FIVE WAYS THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY CAN CELEBRATE DR. KING’S LEGACY OF NON VIOLENCE AND SERVICE:
- Celebrate diversity: eating food from different cultures, reading books by authors from different backgrounds, and making international Pen Pal connections are just a few ideas.
- Attend a commemorative service honoring Dr. King. Check your local churches, civic organizations and local parks for a service near you.
- Read aloud Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech and discuss with your family and friends. You can also read The King Philosophy to learn Dr. King’s six principles of non violence.
- Participate in the Martin Luther King Day of Service by volunteering in your community. Serve a meal at a local shelter, read to young people at the library, help a neighbor in need, buy groceries for someone in need, volunteer at your child’s school or check with your local service organizations and churches to see how you can serve your community.
- Make a stand against injustice by dedicating your time, talent or resources to a cause. The King Center explains that Dr. King “used the power of words and acts of nonviolent resistance, such as protests, grassroots organizing, and civil disobedience to achieve legal equality for African-Americans in the United States. He went on to lead similar campaigns against poverty and international conflict.” You can make a donation to a similar cause, or participate in a peaceful protest.
Managing Attorney Jeff Feulner and the Men’s Divorce Law Firm are proud to honor Dr. King’s legacy of courage, justice, compassion and service. How will you celebrate?
