Gwen Stefani got a big surprise in her divorce settlement from Gavin Rossdale – he walked away from millions of dollars that he was legally entitled to receive. The couple’s divorce has been in the spotlight for several months. The settlement filed with the court made headlines again when it was revealed that Gwen came out the big winner in the division of their property.
Stefani and Rossdale were married for 13 years and they did not have a prenuptial agreement. Thus, California law provided that Rossdale was entitled to half of all that the couple acquired during their marriage, including money Stefani made from her concerts and record sales. Stefani also retained 100% control over her fashion lines L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers. However, Rossdale did not pursue a large settlement and was satisfied that Stefani agreed to put 25% of the profits from L.A.M.B. in a trust, which is presumably to benefit their children.
As for the couple’s real property, Rossdale retains ownership of their four homes in Europe. The couple will split the profits from the sale of their Beverly Hills house. Stefani gets to keep the two other homes in Los Angeles.
The couple also has an agreement prepared to have joint custody of their three children. Rossdale will likely have custody of the children more than 50% of the time due to Stefani’s touring schedule. Interestingly, Rossdale did not seek to recover child support payments or spousal support, which he likely would have been granted since Stefani was the major breadwinner in the family. It has been reported that Stefani and Rossdale each paid $1 million dollars into an expense account for their children.
“It’s still painful,” Stefani confessed on Good Morning America on April 4. “I’m looking at the pieces and going, ‘What is happening?’ There’s so many great things, but it’s still superhard to have your family break up. What do you do after that? Here we are, we’re doing it.”
It is nice to see that even though Stefani and Rossdale have endured extremely difficult times, they are able to part ways in an amicable fashion.
