If you don’t know what “Movember” is, let us tell you a little about it. The Movember Foundation is a movement created to bring awareness about some of the biggest health issues facing men, including:
- Prostate cancer – the second most common cancer in men in the U.S.
- Testicular cancer — the most common cancer in young men aged 15-34 in the U.S.
- Poor mental health – it is estimated that 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. will experience a mental health problem in a given year
- Physical inactivity – only half (53.8%) of American men meet the federal guidelines for physical activity
To participate in the Movember challenge, all men are asked to grow a moustache for 30 days that “turns you into a walking, talking billboard for men’s health.” The MOVE portion of the challenge is to commit to 30 days of physical fitness. Whether you grow your moustache, commit to physical fitness or both, your fundraising efforts are used to raise money for promoting awareness regarding men’s health. To sign-up, please click here.
Worried about where your money will actually go? According to the Movember website, the foundation reports on all initiatives that they fund in order to hold themselves accountable as well as always assessing the success of the initiatives. Further, “[i]t is Movember Foundation policy that funding awards do not allow or support institutional overhead so we can maximize the level of funding applied to research, health services interventions and their evaluation.
Even if you are not interested in growing your moustache or taking the fitness challenge, you can still make a donation. The Movember website provides a place where you can search for a friend or family member’s name that is participating to donate toward their efforts, or you can make a direct donation to the foundation. Take action today to promote awareness regarding the top health challenges facing men today!
