Tumultuous WNBA Marriage Finally Ends in Divorce
Tumultuous WNBA Marriage Finally Ends in Divorce

Brittney Griner has been in the public eye for years.

She burst onto the scene in 2009 as the top women’s basketball recruit in the nation. She was 6’9” and athletic, ready to take Baylor University and the NCAA by storm. She put up incredible numbers throughout her college career, but her leap to fame came from throwing down Sportscenter highlight dunks.

Griner went on to be the top pick of the Phoenix Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft. Two days later, she would publicly reveal that she is a lesbian who was bullied often as a child. And one year after that, Griner declared that she was engaged to another WNBA player, Glory Johnson, and they were to wed that May.

But there was some turmoil in between.

Griner’s family called police to the couple’s home when they couldn’t separate the two ladies. An argument started and a dog bowl was thrown, although the details still seem a bit murky. We do know that Griner suffered a bite mark and numerous cuts, while Johnson was bleeding from the mouth.

The marriage went on as planned. However, a petition for divorce was filed a mere 28 days after the ceremony. Johnson was ordered to vacate the marital home during the divorce proceedings despite being pregnant with the couple’s first children, twin girls. A police escort was required.

That divorce has now been finalized.

There was an accusation of cheating against Johnson and issues concerning the children relative to Griner. Johnson ultimately convinced the court to order her ex-wife to pay just over $5,000 per month in child support as well as “$2,835 per month to pay for daycare services,” per TMZ.

The winning carried over to the court for Johnson, who put on a show against Griner during a 77-74 Dallas Wings win. Johnson poured in 23 points and posted 22 rebounds for the league’s first 20-20 game of the season.
